55. Your Kids: Are You Helping or Interfering?

I hope that you will join me today as I delve deep into the intricate world of parenting, a world where love, concern, and an impulse to help often intertwine. As the founder of my coaching platform, I've had the personal privilege of guiding professional midlife women through the labyrinth of their emotions, and it's a recurring theme that keeps surfacing – the delicate balance between offering assistance and interfering in their children's lives.

I tackle the issue of well-meaning over-involvement, or what some may call being a "fixer." As our young adults grow and evolve, so must our approach.

I offer six ideas that will help you reshape your understanding of effective support as a parent. My hope is that this episode will offer a fresh perspective on parenting in the modern age, so tune in, as we unravel the complexities of parenting in our modern emotional lives.

Show Highlights (my 6 ideas to consider)

  • Reevaluating Parental Help: the difference and balance between helping and interfering

  • Identifying Source of Impulse: understanding the drive to “fix” our children's problems

  • Embracing Discomfort: why it's important to be present with your child during their discomfort while also allowing them to grow independently

  • Discerning Help: how to tell if something is truly an emergency

  • Making Peace with Reality: encouragement that not all problems are within our power to prevent

  • Empowering Growth: shifting the focus from over-involvement to offering support
