20. Learn This Modern Emotional Super Power
We have pain, physical or emotional, and then we have thoughts about our pain. Our thoughts are like volume knobs that allow us to turn up the volume on our pain or turn down the volume.
When we feel the pain of a negative emotion, we can respond in three different ways: (1) avoid it, (2) resist it, or (3) allow it. Our instinct is often to either avoid it or resist it, but so much unnecessary suffering can be avoided if we actually allow it.
I refer to this skill as a modern super power, and it’s what I help my clients work on. Listen in as I give you methods to allow yourself to feel emotions, even negative ones, and notice how they feel. If we allow those emotions to be there and even welcome them rather than try to avoid them or resist them, you will stop fearing them.
